THE SYSTEM

With more than 3 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, Toronto is the largest city in Canada. It lies on the northern shore of Lake Ontario in the Province of Ontario. TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) operates two full metro lines and one short elevated light rail line (Scarborough RT). Apart from these rapid rail lines there is a 75 km long tram network and the GO Transit suburban rail service connecting with the metro at the central Union station and other stations. The subway carries some 200 million passengers a year. The Yonge-University-Spadina Subway started operating along Yonge Street on 30 March 1954 (Eglinton - Union 7.4 km). It was later extended to St.George (1963), York Mills (1973), Finch (1974), Wilson (1978) and finally to Downsview in 1996. It is now 31 km long and has 32 stations. The Bloor-Danforth Subway runs parallel to Lake Ontario from east to west and opened in three stages: 1966 from Keele to Woodbine; 1968 westwards to Islington, and eastwards to Warden; 1980 to Kipling and to Kennedy. It is now 27.5 km long with 31 stations. Bloor/Yonge, Union, Finch, Eglinton and Dundas are the busiest stations on the network with 70,000-90,000 daily passengers boarding there. The Scarborough RT is similar to automated metros in Vancouver, Lille or Toulouse, and started service on 24 May 1985. From the green line's terminus Kennedy it runs on an elevated structure to the new town centre of Scarborough in northeastern Toronto. The line is 6.4 km long and has 6 stations. The Sheppard Subway runs from Sheppard/Yonge to Don Mills (6.4 km, 4 new stations) and opened on 24 Nov 2002. Eventually it will reach Scarborough Centre in the east and Downsview in the west. |
