With 350,000 inhabitants and 1.5 million in the metropolitan area, Porto is the second largest city in Portugal, situated in the north of the country.

Currently a light rail network (Metro ligeiro, similar to Stadtbahn or Premetro networks elsewhere in Europe) is being built. Phase 1 includes a total network of 70 km, of which 50 km are converted rail tracks and 20 km are newly built. 7 km are underground through the centre of Porto. When completed there will be 66 stations with 70 m long and 25 cm high platforms for Adtranz' Eurotrams (like the ones in service in Strasbourg), 19 modernised and 37 new stations (incl. 10 underground stations).

Construction work on the central Campanhã - Trindade section started in April 1999, and regular passenger service began in 2004. Operation on the converted surface route from Trindade to Matosinhos had begun on 7 Dec 2002. The underground north-south line (yellow) was opened in Sept. 2005. The river Douro is crossed on the top level of the Luis I Bridge. On the south bank of the river the line runs at street level through the municipality of Gaia.
