Milan (Milano) is Italy's second largest city and the capital of the Lombardy region. It has 1.5 million inhabitants (3 million in a metropolitan area of almost 1000 km2). The 3-line Milan metro network is 74 km long and has 85 stations (74 underground). M2 reaches far out of the city to Gessate. Line M1 (Linea rossa) opened in 1964 between Sesto Marelli and Lotto, a branch to Gambara was added in 1966. Later the line was extended at all ends: 1975 to QT8 and to Inganni; 1980 to San Leonardo; 1986 to Molino Dorino and to Sesto FS; 1992 to Bisceglie; 2005 to Rho-Fiera. Line M2 (Linea verde) followed in 1969 between Caiazzo and Gobba. Later extensions were built: 1970 to Centrale FS; 1971 to Garibaldi FS; 1972 to Gorgonzola; 1978 to Cadorna; 1981 to Cologno Nord; 1983 to Porta Genova; 1985 to Romolo and to Gessate; 1994 to Famagosta; 2005 to Abbiategrasso. A southern extension to Milanofiori is under construction. Line M3 (Linea gialla) is the newest line and opened in 1990 between Centrale FS and Porta Romana. It was extended in 1991 to San Donato and Sondrio, and in 1995 to Zara. An extension north is in planning stage. M3 is fully accessible for handicapped people. For a better integration of suburban trains and metro, a cross city rail tunnel (Passante) was built to connect northern and southern suburban lines and allow better transfer to the metro (Garibaldi - M2, Repubblica- M3, Porta Venezia - M1). After the first part from Milano Nord Bovisa to Porta Venezia had been opened in Dec 1997 the full link was completed in 2004. |
