The Italian city of Catania is situated on the eastern shore of Sicily and has 370,000 inhabitants (700,000 in the metropolitan area). The "Metropolitana di Catania" opened on 27 June 1999 between Borgo and Porto. It is 3.8 km long and has 6 stations and 1435 mm gauge. It runs underground between Borgo and Piazza Galatea, then on the surface along the coast to the FS Central Railway Station and further south to the harbour (Porto). The underground alignment actually replaces a surface route built in 1895. The Metropolitana is operated by Ferrovia Circumetnea which also runs a narrow gauge diesel line from Borgo westwards around the Etna volcano and back to the coast at Riposto (113 km). An underground extension is currently under construction from Galetea to Giovanni XXIII (in front of the railway station) in order to extend the line later into the city centre (Piazza Stesicoro). From Borgo towards the west the Circumetnea will be partly upgraded for metro service to provide a fast and frequent link to S. Nullo, Nesima and Misterbianco. The first section in preparation will have four stations: Milo, Cibali, S.Nullo and Nesima. It will eventually reach Paterṇ. From Stesicoro a north-south line might be added towards Piazza Duomo, Plaia, Librino and the airport. |
