The Turkish capital has some 3.5 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area. Currently there are two types of metro lines in service: - METRO Line 1 runs as a full metro line from Kizilay to Batikent. Opened in autumn 1997 (construction work started 4 years earlier), it has 12 stations and a total length of 14.6 km, of which 6.5 km are underground, 4.5 km at grade and 3.2 km elevated. Plans include an extension of this line (or a second line) south-west from Kizilay to Çayyolu (18 km) along Eskisehir Road, Ulus - Keçiören (7.9 km) and TBMM - Dikmen (4.8 km). In September 2000 bids were submitted for an extension of Line 1 from Batikent to Sinkan and Törekent (18 km). The metro has 3rd rail power supply (750V) and uses 3-car-trains (6 during peak hours) in ATC and ATO operation. The average station distance is 1.2 km. Stations are equipped with 2 elevators from street level to platform. Fare collection is done with magnetic cards at ticket barriers. - ANKARAY is a light metro, which runs between Dikimevi and ASTI (8.5 km, of which 6.6 km are in tunnel, Emek station is above ground). It has 11 stations and opened on 30 Aug. 1996 after 4 years of construction work. Average station distance is 790 m, stations have 90 m long platforms. Transfer to the Metro is possible at Kizilay and to suburban trains at Kurtulus. A major bus terminal is situated at ASTI. Planned extensions are from Maltepe north to Etlik (5.7 km), from Kurtulus north-east to Hasköy (4 km) and from Dikimevi south-east to Dogukent (7.7 km). Bids for the following extensions were submitted in Sept. 2000: Asti - Köy Hizmetleri (5.7 km) and Dikimevi - Sitaler / Önder Mahallesi (4 km). |
