Marhalas are converted caravanserais and often consist of several connected underground houses (in matmata and ksars - ancient granaries), where sleeping quarters and communal bathing and toilet facilities have been installed. They also have
their own simple, but clean and adequate, restaurants. There are marhalas at Houmt Souk, Nefta and Kairouan.
