Guinea-Bissau's few hotels and restaurants offer excellent food, though some places are expensive. Local specialities include
jollof rice, chicken and fish dishes. Staples are cassava, yams and maize.

Casual wear is widely accepted. Social customs should be respected, particularly in Muslim areas. Petty thievery and pickpocketing
are increasingly common, particularly at the airport, in markets and at public gatherings. Photography: Visitors should request permission from security personnel before photographing military or police installations. Tipping: Ten per cent is an acceptable amount, although not encouraged.
